I’ve always lived in a plant-filled home. My Mum is a keen indoor and outdoor gardener so I grew up with a huge umbrella plant in our living room and more spider plants than empty Tupperware boxes being saved “just in case”.

For me, there aren’t many home items that can rival a houseplant. They add vibrancy, elegance, and a sense of luxury while purifying the air and bringing a slice of nature indoors.

Indoor plants have a way of transforming spaces in the home, making our living spaces more opulent and inviting. I wouldn’t live in a home without them. Here are my top 12 favorite indoor plants that will add a bit of luxury to your home.

Indoor Plants for a Touch of Luxury

From my ultimate favorite, the fiddle leaf fig tree, to an easy houseplant, the humble snake plant, adding these plants will help to make your home feel luxurious on a budget.

Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata)

With its large, glossy leaves and an imposing structure, the Fiddle Leaf Fig stands as a symbol of sophistication and style. Thriving in bright, indirect light, this plant can grow quite tall, making a bold statement in any room.

Its ability to command attention while complementing modern interior designs makes it a top choice for those looking to add a touch of luxury to their homes. However, it can be hard to grow and keep alive, so maybe try other indoor plants first until you get the hang of it.

Monstera Deliciosa

Often referred to as the Swiss Cheese Plant, Monstera Deliciosa is beloved for its distinctive split leaves that add an exotic and tropical flair. This houseplant is relatively easy to care for and can adapt to various lighting conditions, making it a versatile addition to luxurious spaces.

Its rapid growth and lush foliage make it an excellent choice for filling large spaces with greenery and creating a luxury home.

Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae)

Resembling a bird in flight, the Bird of Paradise plant brings an element of drama and splendor to any interior. Its large, banana-like leaves create a lush, tropical feel, perfect for adding a luxurious resort-like vibe to your home.

There’s a reason why this plant features in a lot of hotel lobbies, movie scenes, and interior design mags. If grown to its full potential, it is a striking addition to your home that will definitely be a talking point.

This plant thrives in bright, indirect light and because of its size, will require some space to spread its majestic wings.

Rubber Plant (Ficus elastic)

The Rubber Plant is known for its dark, glossy leaves that can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any room, especially in a bathroom.

Its robust nature and low-maintenance requirements make it a popular choice for those seeking a luxurious yet easy-to-care-for indoor plant.

The dark green color adds drama and pairs well with a lot of interior design styles and color palettes. Position it in a well-lit corner and watch it grow into a magnificent focal point.

Majesty Palm (Ravenea rivularis)

For those looking to imbue their living spaces with a hint of tropical luxury, the Majesty Palm is an unparalleled choice. Its graceful fronds and towering presence evoke images of opulent seaside resorts and lush, exotic landscapes.

While it requires a bit of care to keep thriving, the visual impact it brings to a room is well worth the effort.

Snake Plant (Sansevieria)

One of the easiest plants to grow, this succulent, with its striking, upright leaves and remarkable resilience, is a modern interior designer’s dream. It’s incredibly low-maintenance, thriving on neglect, and can adapt to a wide range of lighting conditions.

A snake plant’s air-purifying capabilities and architectural look make it a perfect addition to any luxury home. It can grow up to 6 feet tall, and the bigger it gets, the more luxurious it feels.

Orchids

Orchids are synonymous with luxury and elegance, making them a favored choice for upscale interiors. Their delicate blooms and graceful stems can elevate any space, adding a sophisticated and refined touch.

Their unique appearance, different from most other flowering plants, adds an element of sophistication and exoticism. With various species and colors available, orchids offer the flexibility to match any décor style.

Indoor Olive Trees

Olive trees are evocative of the Mediterranean region, known for their stunning landscapes, historic significance, and relaxed, luxurious lifestyle.

Whenever I see an olive tree, it transports me back to luxury villas and hotels on the Med, automatically giving a room a luxurious feel.

Incorporating an olive tree into interior design brings a piece of this cherished region’s elegance and timeless appeal into the home.

With their slender trunks, silvery-green leaves, and sophisticated, gnarled appearance that they develop over time, olive trees blend well with a variety of decor styles, from rustic to contemporary.

Olive trees are not as commonly used indoors as some other plants, but their ability to thrive indoors with the right care conditions means that seeing a flourishing olive tree inside is a sign of attentive care and cultivation, lending an air of luxury to the space.

Money Tree

One of the most compelling reasons for the luxury status of money trees is their deep-rooted symbolism in Feng Shui and other cultural beliefs. They are thought to bring financial success and prosperity to their owners.

Money trees are distinctive for their braided trunks, a feature that is not only striking but also symbolizes the intertwining of luck, fortune, and stability. This unique aesthetic feature contributes to their perceived value and luxury, as it sets them apart from more common houseplants.

Umbrella Tree

Going back to the Umbrella tree, this is another favorite plant of mine that makes a room feel luxurious. It can grow up to 2 – 3m tall, which will provide a real wow factor in any room.

Although not as luxurious as an Orchid or Bird of Paradise plant, the beauty of an Umbrella plant is how the glossy leaves fan out in a distinctive canopy. Their rich green leaves will not look out of place with luxury palettes such as jewel colors, or soft neutrals.

A Tall Cactus

A bit like a palm plant, a tall cactus makes a room feel automatically tropical and will transport you to lazy days spent in a holiday villa or by the sea. Their distinctive shapes and textures add a dramatic focal point to any room, blending well with both minimalist and more eclectic decor styles.

Cacti are often associated with exotic desert landscapes, evoking images of vast, open spaces and rugged natural beauty.

Incorporating a large cactus into home decor can bring a sense of adventure and an otherworldly charm to an indoor environment, suggesting a connection to these remote, beautiful places and providing a bit of tropical luxury.

Calathea

Calathea comes in many varieties, with different colors and patterns. The Calathea Orbifolia is one of the most stunning varieties within the Calathea family, celebrated for its large, round leaves adorned with striking green and silver stripes.

The intricate patterns on its leaves resemble artistic designs, adding a sophisticated and decorative element to the interiors.

It thrives in high-humidity environments, making it a perfect luxurious addition to bathrooms or kitchens where it can add a spa-like or tropical resort feel.

Incorporating any of these twelve luxurious indoor plants into your home can dramatically elevate your living space, infusing it with life, elegance, and a touch of nature’s serenity.

Whether you prefer the towering grandeur of a Fiddle Leaf Fig, the exotic allure of a Monstera Deliciosa, or the refined elegance of Orchids, each plant offers its unique brand of luxury.

I always design a room to include plants, even a small downstairs bathroom or a cramped hallway will have room for one!

Remember, the key to keeping these plants thriving is not just about providing them with the right environmental conditions but also integrating them into your home in a way that complements your personal style.

With the right care and placement, these luxurious indoor plants can transform your home into an oasis of beauty and tranquility.

Yes, there are several pet-friendly options that can still provide a luxurious feel, such as the Spider Plant and Calathea. Always check the toxicity of plants if you have pets.
