Family Bathroom Ideas: How to Create a Calm Space for a Perfect Household Bathroom

Back in August, I wrote about our new family bathroom plans with mood boards and color schemes and how I wanted it to look. Just before Christmas I knocked the final nail into the wall and hung up our bamboo shelves and the first room in our house renovation was complete!

Family Bathroom Ideas

The bathroom itself is a decent size – 270cm x 170cm and the bathroom suite we inherited was okay. It was a bit dated with dark mahogany wood and a shower over the bath, but the bath plug mechanism no longer worked, and the bath leaked slightly.

We knew at some point we would have to rip out the bath and repair so when Burlington Bathrooms asked if I would like to collaborate with them, we jumped at the chance.

Small Bathroom Design

I had created a Pinterest board to collect family bathroom ideas for our new small bathroom renovation, I wanted something quite calming with neutral colors and a hint of luxury with gold accessories.

This small bathroom is mainly used by the kids as we have an en suite. But, whilst we are still in the process of renovating our downstairs bathroom, our guests also use our family bathroom so I wanted it to be functional but beautiful!

Terrazzo

Whilst researching for bathroom tiles for a small bathroom, I saw these amazing terrazzo tiles by Boutique Stone, and the bathroom design was created around them!

I knew that a sage green color would work perfectly with the terrazzo tiles and that the gold accessories would help to pick out the browns and beiges of the tiles.

First of all, I changed the layout of the small bathroom so that we could fit in a bath and a separate shower. I wanted the tiles to be displayed around the shower cubicle so it had to be separate from the bath. I also like a stand-alone bath as it is a really lovely feature in a family bathroom.

This would mean moving the toilet to create a new space for the bath.

Our builder ripped out our bathroom and we soon realized that it would be a lot of work to move the toilet to the right-hand corner next to the shower. We decided to move the toilet to the right of its current position and the sink to the right-hand corner.

However, this also meant that we would have to move the toilet piping from its current position so our plumber built a stud wall 4 inches from the original wall to hide all the pipes.

The problem with losing 4 inches of floor space meant that we wouldn’t have room for the radiator to go back into its previous position as the bath would be in the way. Our builder suggested lifting it to create more space.

This made perfect sense as it meant when you stood up to get out of the bath, the radiator would be the same height for you to grab a towel.

As the towel rack was chrome, I decided to paint it matt black so it matched the shower fitting in the room and wouldn’t clash with the gold accessories.

I used Rust-Oleum Universal Black Matt Multi-surface spray paint which is a fabulous product and I highly recommend it. No primer is needed, you just spray directly on!

The bath feet were also chrome so I decided to paint them the same colour and keep the bathroom accessories black.

Our Terrazzo Tiles

The first thing our builder did in the family bathroom, once all the pipes and walls were made good, was to put in our floor-to-ceiling tiles for the shower unit. I had to make a decision about the grouting and originally, I was going with a dark grout like anthracite grey or black.

However, I decided this would be too dark and I wanted the tiles to seamlessly blend in together. We looked at white but as the tiles are off-white, this also looked like too much of a contrast. So, we decided to go for a beige grout which had a slight gold tint to it.

Although I wasn’t too sure, to begin with, I now realize it is the perfect choice as it blends in easily and actually looks really good with the gold accessories and the gold tints in the terrazzo tiles.

Choosing the Bathroom Color

I wanted to keep the terrazzo tiles the main décor feature in the family bathroom, so I decided to keep the rest of the décor quite simple with paneled walls instead of tiles and neutral flooring.

Sage green was the color I wanted to use right from the beginning and I found the perfect shade – Valspar Thames Fog – for the paneling.

Our builder used tongue and groove paneling with a small shelf on top and I had to prime the wood first to stop the wood knots from bleeding through. I then used Valspar Kitchen and Bathroom paint on top and it needed two coats.

Next up, I had to find some flooring for the bathroom. I really wanted a hexagonal tile that would give us pattern and texture without it being too busy. I sent off for some samples and immediately loved the Carrara Bianca Esagono Vinyl flooring from best4flooring.co.uk

The marble pattern makes it feel luxurious and the beautiful gold grout line stands out with the gold accessories of the bathroom.

Our Family Bathroom Suite

I was approached by Burlington Bathrooms asking if I was looking to update or renovate a bathroom in our house and they couldn’t have come at a better time! With my color scheme and tiles chosen, I wanted the family bathroom suite to be white with a luxurious quality to it.

I was immediately drawn to the Edwardian Basin with its Gold Washstand and towel rack.

Due to the dimensions of our household bathroom, we decided on a curved 90cm shower quadrant in matt black. I knew black would be a better backdrop for the Riviera Shower valve, Fixed AirBurst Shower, and Handset & Holder with Hose that I had chosen.

I wanted the toilet to sit quietly between the shower and bath. We went with a Regal WC with a lever cistern in white and with a white lid.

Finally, we went for the Windsor 150cm double-ended bath with standard feet (which I spray painted black) and finished the bath with the Riviera bath and shower mixer with handset and hose kit.

The finishing touches were a round mirror from IKEA, a shelf from part of a scaffolding board, and bamboo shelves from Graham and Green. I also found an abstract print I’ve had for years from Dunelm which suited the family bathroom colours perfectly!

I really do love this bathroom; it provides the calm and tranquil setting I was after and the colors all work in harmony together. I just hope the kids (and our guests) appreciate it as much as I do!
