Just as you express yourself with your fashion choices, your living space is a reflection of your personality, tastes, and experiences. Room decoration and design offer a fantastic opportunity to express yourself and create a space that truly feels like home.

Have you ever visited a family member or friend’s house and instantly recognized their style within the four walls? Perhaps you have a friend who wears monochrome clothes and their home is neutral, with black accents and off-white walls. Or a family member who is a little eccentric and whose home is full of color, with a bit of maximalism thrown in.

How do they create such a cohesive style? For many, it comes naturally, but if you are struggling to find ways to express yourself with your interior design choices, there are a few things you can do first.

How to Find Your Style in Room Decoration

I find the easiest way to determine your style, is to look in your wardrobe! Look at the colors, patterns, and textures you gravitate towards in your clothing. This can give you insights into the palettes and materials you might prefer in your home decor.

If this doesn’t give you any inspiration, try these things;

  • Research various interior design styles such as modern, rustic, industrial, bohemian, Scandinavian, etc, and find what resonates with you. What stands out?
  • Browse design magazines and websites. Pinterest is a huge resource for inspiration, you can curate boards and slowly, you will see an interior design pattern emerging.
  • Consider your daily habits and needs. Do you entertain often? Do you need a quiet workspace? Your lifestyle can significantly influence your design choices, such as the need for durable fabrics or ample seating.
  • Take note of the items you already own and love. Consider why you like them – is it their color, style, or comfort?
  • Determine how much you are willing to spend on decorating. This can help narrow down your choices and prevent overspending.
  • Think about the functionality of each room. Practicality is crucial, so ensure your style aligns with the purpose of the space. For example, a minimalist style might be ideal for a clutter-free workspace, while a cozy, eclectic style might be better for a living room.
  • I love visiting furniture showrooms, home decor stores, and design expos to see and feel different styles in person.
  • Use paint samples, fabric swatches, and flooring samples to test out colors and textures in your space.
  • If you’re feeling overwhelmed, consider consulting with an interior designer. They can provide guidance and help you refine your style.
  • Finally, trust your instinct, your home should reflect your personal tastes and make you feel comfortable. Don’t be afraid to choose what you love, even if it doesn’t fit into a specific design category.

Room Decoration Tips

Here are nine creative ways to express yourself through room decoration and design, transforming your living space into a personalized sanctuary and helping you to find your style.

1. Color Palette Selection

It all starts with color! Colors can have a profound impact on your mood and perception, and can completely reinvent a room. However, this can be one of the most overwhelming choices.

Here are some tips to help you get started (and don’t forget to check out your wardrobe to see what colors you tend to migrate towards);

Bold and Vibrant Colors

If you’re an outgoing and energetic person, consider using bold colors like deep reds, burnt oranges and rust, and bright blues.

These colors can be slightly overwhelming in a home, so introduce them in a feature wall, soft furnishings and rugs, or unusual ways such as painting a ceiling, or the doors and trim in a contrasting color.

Soft and Neutral Tones

Soft hues like pastels, whites, and grays can be very soothing for a more relaxed and serene environment. These colors work well in creating a calming and sophisticated space.

Don’t forget to take into account which direction the room faces. If the room is north-facing, bright whites and grays can make it feel cold, so opt for softer shades like beige and grays with a hint of red.

Contrasting Combinations

If you love experimenting, try contrasting color schemes such as black and white or complementary colors like blue and orange. This approach can add dynamism and interest to your room.

One of my favorite ways to use color in the home is to go for a bold color on the wall and add contrasting colors in the furniture. For example, a dark navy wall with a burnt orange sofa. Beautiful!

2. Furniture

Don’t overlook your furniture choices when it comes to expressing your style. Furniture can completely change the look and feel of a room and serve as a focal point.

Custom Furniture

Invest in bespoke furniture pieces that reflect your unique style. Custom furniture designs allow you to choose materials, finishes, and dimensions tailored to your needs.

This is important if you don’t have a lot of room to play with or awkward spaces. Fitted wardrobes in the bedroom help make the most of your space and can also double up as a beautiful feature that you can’t find anywhere else.

Statement Furniture

Have you ever walked into a living room and a deep red sofa is the star of the show? Investing in one or two standout pieces of furniture can help serve as focal points and help you determine how to decorate the rest of the room.

This could be an antique dresser, a modernist sofa, or a custom-made table. Don’t be afraid to mix different styles and periods. An eclectic mix can showcase your diverse tastes and create a unique, personalized look.

Unconventional Furniture

Furniture can also be an artistic expression in your home. Adding dining chairs with unusual shapes creates a modern and contemporary look, or coffee tables made from tree trunks or marble can be a real talking point.

3. Textiles and Fabrics

Textiles are where you can really express your design choices. Choose bedding, cushions, and throws in fabrics and patterns that you love. This could be anything from luxurious silks and velvets to cozy knits and linens.

And don’t forget the rugs and curtains, they can dramatically change the feel of a room. I often find a rug I love and then implement those colors into a room. As rugs tend to be patterned, I find it easier to choose the rug first and then work with the color palette, it is great for inspiration!

4. Artisan and Handmade Decor

Even on holiday, I find myself in independent homeware shops and stalls. I go to Ibiza often, it has the most amazing bohemian homeware stores and something always ends up in my suitcase.

Incorporating handmade items into your home decor adds a personal touch and supports local artisans. It is a great way to add your own style to a home, without following the trends.

Things like handmade pottery, woven textiles, or original artworks can be a talking point in your home, and bring a smile to your face!

5. Upcycled and Reclaimed Materials

Another great way to find your style and interior theme for your home is to DIY. Using upcycled and reclaimed materials can create a distinctive and environmentally friendly aesthetic.

Incorporate reclaimed wood into your furniture, flooring, or accent walls. Each piece of wood has a history and character that adds depth to your decor.

Repurpose vintage items such as old suitcases, doors, or machinery parts into functional decor pieces like tables, shelves, or light fixtures.

6. Themed Decor

Choosing an interior theme for your room can unify your decor and express a particular aspect of your personality or interests. Some examples include;

  • Travel Themes: If you love to travel, incorporate elements from your favorite destinations. This could include maps, souvenirs, or decor inspired by different cultures.
  • Nature Themes: For nature enthusiasts, bring the outdoors inside with botanical prints, natural materials, and plenty of plants.
  • Vintage or Retro Themes: If you’re nostalgic for a particular era, decorate with vintage or retro items. This could include furniture, lighting, and accessories from the period.

7. Wall Decor and Murals

I love using wallpaper in my home, it adds much-needed pattern and can instantly turn a room from being a bit bland with monotone colors to a room that highlights your design style.

Your walls offer a blank canvas to express your interior design style;

  • Wall Murals: A mural can transform an entire wall into a piece of art. You can paint it yourself or use wallpaper murals for a dramatic effect.
  • Gallery Walls: Create a gallery wall with a collection of your favorite artwork, photographs, or prints. Arrange them symmetrically, or mix the gallery wall up with unusual items such as mirrors, clocks, or macrame hangings.
  • Shelving Displays: Use wall-mounted shelves to display books, trinkets, and small plants. This not only adds interest but also keeps your space organized.

8. Personalized Ceilings

Don’t forget about the fifth wall – your ceiling. I would say a white ceiling appears in around 95% of homes, so if you want to go for something a bit different, get that paintbrush out!

You could paint or install murals on your ceiling to add an unexpected element of interest and beauty. Use contrasting colors to the rest of your walls so that it creates a dramatic backdrop.

9. Cultural Elements

To create a diverse and unique interior theme, think about blending elements from different cultures. Mix and match textiles from different parts of the world, such as African mud cloth, Indian block prints, and Japanese shibori, to create a rich tapestry of colors and patterns.

Decorate with artifacts and decor items that represent various cultures, such as masks, sculptures, and pottery, and add your favorite souvenirs and products you’ve bought on your travels.

Room decoration and design are powerful tools for expressing yourself and creating an interior theme that feels uniquely yours. By carefully selecting colors, art, furniture, and other elements, you can infuse your personality into your room decoration and every corner of your home.
